Reduced Sodium

The low-sodium content in each Fiber Formula Dog Biscuit (.06% DM) meets nutritional guidelines for dogs with heart disease, circulatory problems, and geriatric dogs.

Older Dog

Low protein (16.10% DM), phosphorus (.41% DM), and sodium (.06% DM) levels in each Fiber Formula biscuit meet veterinary nutritionists' guidelines for geriatric dogs.

Diabetes

Veterinarians recommend a low-fat, high-fiber diet for dogs with diabetes mellitus. With a fat level of 2.5% (DM) and fiber of 19.0% (DM), Fiber Formula could be the perfect treat. Ask your veterinarian.

Anal Gland

Fiber Formula can be used as a fiber source with each biscuit containing 1.63 g crude fiber.

Hyperlipidemia

The nutritional goal in diets and treats for this disease is a lowered fat level. Fiber Formula has the lowest fat level of any treat manufactured today.

Low Calories for Healthy Dogs

Healthy dogs with tendencies towards obesity or dogs that receive many treats can eat Fiber Formula without adding excessive calories to their diet.

Ask your veterinarian whether Fiber Formula Dog Biscuits would be appropriate for your dog's diet.

Medium-Size Bone (26 oz. box)

Question: How many calories are in the Fiber Formula dog biscuit?
Answer: Each Fiber Formula dog biscuit has 24.7 calories -- (74.1 kcal/oz.) Fiber Formula has 19% crude fiber and 2.5% fat. Crude fiber has no calories. On an ounce per ounce basis, this is about 25% fewer calories than the leading brand (Milk Bone®). Milk Bone® has 1% crude fiber and a hefty level of fat. It isn't possible for Milk Bone® to have fewer calories on an ounce-to-ounce basis.

Question: What size are Fiber Formula biscuits?
Answer: Each biscuit is 1/3 oz. or 9.45 grams.

Question: How many Fiber Formula biscuits to a box?
Answer: Approximately 78 biscuits per box.

Question: What is the sodium level (milligrams and percentage) in Fiber Formula?
Answer: 5.1 mg/biscuit or .06% DM (.054% As Fed)

Calculations:     1 oz. = 28.6 grams
                        1 biscuit =    9.45 grams (approx. 1/3 oz.)
                        1 biscuit =    .054% As Fed (.06% DM) sodium

9.45 grams X .00054 sodium = .005103 grams X 1000 mg = 5.1 mg. sodium/biscuit

This amount meets the recommended amount for a sodium-restricted diet as recommended by Mark Morris and Associates, the leading pet nutritionists in the field. (Their text book "Small Animal Nutrition" is used in most veterinary schools.) All our formulas meet their recommended ranges for nutrient levels.

Question: How many mg of fat are in Fiber Formula?
Answer: 212 mg per biscuit.

Question: What kind of fat is used in Fiber Formula?

FOS Questions

Question: What are Fructooligosaccharides (FOS)?
Answer: A carbohydrate/fiber derived from the chicory root.

Question: What is FOS's function?
Answer: It provides a food source for healthy bacteria like Lactobacillus, thereby increasing their population. Increasing the number of healthy bacteria has the effect of "crowding out" unhealthy bacteria.

Question: What problems can FOS help?
Answer:

  1. Stabilizes the bacterial population in the healthy animal.
  2. During intestinal disease there is often a proliferation of gram negative bacteria; FOS helps combat this.
  3. Any situation where stabilizing the colonic bacteria population is needed.

Question: Can Fiber Formula be used as a FOS supplement?
Answer: While the amount in Fiber Formula may be helpful, Fiber Formula is actually meant to be used as a companion product to a diet containing FOS or a diet supplemented with FOS.

Omega-3 Questions

Question: Why has Fiber Formula balanced its Ø6:Ø3 fatty acid ration?
Answer: Adding omega-3 fatty acids has been shown to have preventative benefits (i.e. heart disease in humans) and therapeutic effects in a number of diseases. The research shows benefits in many species including dogs.

Question: What is the effect of balancing the fatty acid ration?
Answer: There is a moderating effect of the severity of the bodys' inflammatory response to almost any insult. It is thought to be particularly useful in inflammatory disease like allergies, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, etc.

Question: Is Fiber Formula an omega-3 supplement?
Answer: Fiber Formula does contain more omega-3 fatty acids than most other treats, and may be of some help alone. It is really meant to be fed as part of a diet which is balanced, or supplemented with omega-3 fatty acids.

Question: Can I use Fiber Formula with omega-3 fatty acid supplements?
Answer: Yes, the ration of Ø6:Ø3 fatty acids in the dog's overall diet is more important than the amount of omega-3s added. Fiber Formula at any feeding level will contribute the correct ratio of fatty acids.

Question: I have heard omega-3 fatty acids weaken the body's disease response?
Answer: True; this is the reason why omega-3 fatty acids are effective. Added omega-3s cut down on many aspects of the inflammatory response, including clotting, platelet adhesion, and inflammatory factor release. These effects have been proven in the dog and without negative or pathologic effects. We suspect that to create a problem, you would need to feed inordinate amounts of omega-3 fatty acids over a long period of time, as is true in the human.

Ingredients

Wheat Flour, Ground Peanut Hulls (a source of fiber, 20%), Wheat Middlings, Beet Pulp, Poultry Digest, Fish Meal, Fructooligosaccharides, Potassium Chloride, Calcium Carbonate, Zinc Oxide, Manganous Oxide, Copper Oxide, Cobalt Carbonate, Choline Chloride, Vitamin A Acetate, D-Activated Animal Sterol, a-Tocopherol Acetate, Niacin, Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin, Thiamine Hydrochloride, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Biotin.

Understanding Ingredients

Wheat Flour A baking flour much like that used in the home. It contains the protein gluten that provides the shape and strength of the biscuit.
Peanut Hulls The outer shell of the peanut. This ingredient is high in insoluble fiber and low in soluble fiber. It provides the crude or insoluble fiber.
Beet Pulp The part of the sugar beet left after the sugar is extracted. It is high in insoluble fiber and low in soluble fiber. It is the major source of the fermentable fiber.
Wheat Middlings The middle part of the wheat kernel, inside the husk but outside the meat. It provides some soluble and some insoluble fiber.
Poultry Digest A broth-like liquid made from chicken. The biscuit is dipped in it and it adds taste, but more importantly, aroma.
Flax The seed of the flax plant. This seed (unlike most plant oils) is very high in omega-3 fatty acids.
FOS Fructooligosaccharides is a fiber/carbohydrate that can be used as nourishment by gram positive bacteria like Lactobacillus, but cannot be utilized by gram negative bacteria like E. coli. This has the effect of increasing the "healthy" gram positive population at the expense of the "unhealthy" gram negative population.
