The Most Important Thing You Can Do for Your Dog

New research tells us the single most important thing we can do to assure a happy dog-family relationship is proper obedience training. Only you can do that for your dog. Obedience training prevents behavior problems from starting and builds a channel of communication, which can cure problems.

Don’t Delay!

Ask your veterinarian or pet professional for the name of a good trainer who offers obedience classes. Sign up now, and develop a better pet for life.

For Professional Trainers and Dog Owners Alike

Professional Trainers who train intensively for long periods put a premium on palatability and small size in a treat. Puppy and dog owners, who train less intensively, prefer a nutritious treat that's convenient to buy, for pocket-right on walks and for training without creating greasy, crumbly or smelly pockets and hands.

Training with Treats

Treats should be used to help reinforce good behavior, but should not be used alone. After a dog responds to commands using treats, begin to use stroking, attention, and pats for rewards. Treats can then be used intermittently as a reward. Eventually your dog will obey for your approval, and treats are used occasionally as rewards.

Calcium to Phosphorus Ratio - is a basic element of nutrition and the ratio should be in the range between 1 : 1 and 2 : 1. Backard [backratio.gif (929 bytes)] (or inverse) calcium to phosphorus ratios have an unbalancing effect on the dogs overall diet, and must be compensated for by other parts of the diet.

Fat - less fat is generally better and lowers the calories in a treat but fat is a powerful palatabililty factor.

Sodium - is generally restricted as a dog becomes older, is a potent palatability factor.

Ash - minerals, some is necessary but an excess is an unwelcome load to the dog's system.

Preservatives - consumers are now averse to chemical preservatives.

† - Any pet food product with over a few percent fat and no preservative listed warrants scrutiny.
